what is splinterlands

Splinterlands is an exciting play-to-earn crypto based digital card game. Each card is an NFT (Non-Fungible Token) on the Hive blockchain. Players can earn crypto by collecting, trading, buying, and selling these cards, which have a real monetary value. The main goal in this game is to battle other players with these cards in strategic matches, which are easy to learn but hard to master.

Splinterlands is one of those games where top players actually make a living by winning ranked battles and trading exclusive cards on the marketplace.

the cards

Cards can be broadly separated into five types: summoners, support, magic, melee and ranged. Each card is also assigned one of 5 elements: fire, earth, water, life, death and neutral. Additionally, the card has a mana cost and a variety of other statistics that influence its utility in the game. Cards can be levelled by combining multiple copies of the same card. Higher level cards get increased statistics and, often ,additional abilities.

build a collection

A player must build their collection of cards from the Splinterlands catalogue in order to create teams under different rulesets and battle conditions. “The Starter Set”: Every player begins the game with the same set of starter cards, which includes every Common and Rare from current set, as well as every Common and Rare from the previous set of cards. The starter cards cannot be sold or transferred, but they can be played for rewards at 1 BCX. Cards that are part of the starter set are designated in your Collection by an S in the card’s corner, as pictured below.

battles

When you click the “Battle” button, the fight begins. Players organize decks using limited mana costs that vary from battle to battle. You will be given a time limit of 3 minutes, and will have to configure the deck within that time. Based on the deck combination learned in the tutorial, you will form your own deck in the ranking match. If you win the match, you will get a score and a DEC. If you lose the game, your score will decrease.

Learning the cards, their abilities and which teams function best at cetain mana caps or in certain matchups is crucial to victory. If you win consecutive matches, you will receive additional DEC rewards and additional points and will be earning crypto on a regular base.

dark energy crystals

The main reward in Splinterlands is Dark Energy Crystals (DEC). This cryptocurrency has monetary value, which can be bought and sold with USD (United States Dollars). While its worth is pretty low, it is incredible that you earn this currency just by playing. The rate you earn DEC is relatively low to start with and is entirely dependent on your rank. The higher your rank, the more you earn per win.

This adds an exciting competitive dynamic where every match matters. This adds value to the best cards as it can impact your earnings. This is where the marketplace comes in.

Marketplace

Splinterlands has a very active marketplace with over 100,000 sales every day. The user interface is easy to use with lots of filters to help you find any card you need. Buying and selling cards can be very profitable if done right. However, i suggest to start slowly and learn more about the different card types and rarities.

Users can also rent cards that can be a great way to round your deck while you find your preferred strategy. It is also a great feature to make crypto from cards you aren’t currently using.

rental system

This feature of the platform enables players to continue earning passive income while helping other players on their gameplay journey.

The listing of cards are shown in the card rentals tab on the marketplace of the website. All gamers interested in card rentals must pay in the form of DEC or Credits. In addition, all amounts paid will be held in escrow by the game system. In short, players that list their cards for rent and who will rent can be sure that payments will be made in a seamless manner.

leagues

The 6 Leagues of Splinterlands cover a wide range of collections, experience, and skills. A brand new player in their first week will find themselves in the Novice and Bronze Leagues, while the most experienced players battle it out each Season for the coveted League of Champion I. Even if a player has all max level cards, the cards they can use in battle are always limited to the max level that their current League allows.

Rewards increase as players move higher up in Leagues, but so do the complexity of strategy and the difficulty of competition. Leagues are also limited by a player’s Collection Power, which can always be increased by purchasing or renting more cards.

tournaments

Splinterlands tournaments are scheduled events in which players battle for a prize pool. They come in several different forms and can be customized in many different ways. the total funds that have been given away in all Splinterlands Tournament are Over 1 Million Dollars. Note that big price tournaments require an entry fee. So make sure your deck is ready for combat before you aim for those big prices.

Guild brawls

Guild Brawls are massive cooperative tournaments in which Guilds face-off against other Guilds, competing for Crowns. Crowns are required for a Guild to level up its Arena, one of the three Guild buildings, which allows that Guild to play in higher level Brawls. Each participating Guild is able to submit one player to each Fray of the Brawl. Each fray has different restrictions, such as level limitations and allowed cards, so the Guild must work together to choose the best players for each fray in a given Brawl. Based on the number of victories in the Brawl compared to the other competing Guilds, the Guild is awarded Crowns.

staking rewards

Staking is a way of locking in your SPS for additional rewards on multiple levels. Once staked, SPS tokens are subject to an unstaking period of 4 weeks. Once unstaking of tokens has been initiated, they will be released into the liquid supply at a rate of 1/4 per week for 4 weeks.

The total reward pool for staking SPS tokens started at 7.5 million tokens per month, and will be reduced at a rate of 1% each month. Each player’s share of current staking rewards is based on the amount staked by that player and the total amount staked by all players.

Staking rewards are calculated and accumulated automatically, and can be claimed anytime by the owner, at which point they are added to the player’s liquid SPS balance.

referral program

Splinterlands has an referral program which rewards users who sign up new players. You will earn 5% commission on every verified purchase your referral spends in the game, including the initial $10 starter pack. For each person buying the starter kit using your referral link you will earn about 50 cents worth of credits. If someone that you referred decides to buy a $4 booster pack you will get 20 cents worth of credits. If one of your referrals buys $200 worth of booster packs you will get $10 worth of credits. Any rewards you earn through your affiliate link can be used to buy individual cards in the marketplace or booster packs from the shop.

conclusion
Splinterlands is one of the most promising blockchain-based games with huge upside potential, given its rising popularity and growing user base. Beyond play-to-earn facilities, it features sought-after DeFi technologies, such as staking and governance. This makes it a potentially profitable platform even for those who don’t have the time to focus and play the game.
Given the attention shifting to blockchain-based games these days, Splinterlands can look to be a good alternative for those who feel that they’ve been late to the party with Axie Infinity and My DeFi Pet. Additionally, the game is fairly easy to play and still has a lot of room for more users. Splinterlands is definitely worth a try.
